Happy Days for happy romance for Richatd Hannon Andrew Nelis Racing

Happy Romance landed her owners another huge pot when holding off the late attention of favourite Devious Company in the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes at York. With the Weatherbys Super Sprint in the bag, connections of the Richard Hannon-trained winner were already in bonus territory, although she did have to prove her stamina stepping up to six furlongs for the first time. The Dandy Man filly showed her blistering speed when quickening away from the field over a furlong out, with the dual Group Two-placed Devious Company - whose previous four outings had come at seven furlongs - caught flat-footed...                      Andrew Nelis Racing

Ventura Tormenta and the Lir Jet to class at the Curragh Andrew Nelis racing

The Lir Jet and Ventura Tormenta both feature in what looks like being a top-class renewal of the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday. Middleham Park Racing have added the Richard Hannon-trained Ventura Tormenta to the Group One feature at a cost of 20,000 euros after his short-head success over The Lir Jet in last month’s Prix Robert Papin. The Michael Bell-trained The Lir Jet had previously beaten Hannon’s charge when winning the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot – on what was Ventura Tormenta’s debut – and is set to be in opposition again at the weekend. Hannon said: “Middleham Park were keen to take the race on because the Morny was already looking over-subscribed. I think this was a good opportunity for the horse to have a crack at a Group One. He has come back from France well and has never looked better. “He has put on weight and the whole experience of France will have done his confidence a lot of good. I think the track at the Curragh will suit him ...

Barney Roy has his triple Grade one on his CV Andrew Nelis Racing

Barney Roy claimed the third Group One of his career in Sunday’s Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich. Now a six-year-old, he won the St James’s Palace Stakes in his younger days for Richard Hannon and went on to be narrowly defeated in the Eclipse. Following a failed spell at stud, he was gelded and sent to Charlie Appleby before adding to his Group One tally at Meydan in March. It looked a good opportunity in Germany to further supplement to his haul, but it was hard work for William Buick. As the field turned into the straight, stablemate Spotify was better positioned in second with Barney Roy last and being ridden vigorously. He began to respond, though, and while Joseph O’Brien’s Patrick Sarsfield briefly looked like hitting the front, Barney Roy hit top gear. Quest The Moon pushed him all the way to the line, but Barney Roy held on by a neck with Patrick Sarsfield’s winning run coming to an end in third. “There was a strong pace from the start...

Ventura Tormenta had finished over six lengths behind The Lir Jet at Royal Ascot in the Norfolk Stakes, but Hannon’s youngster was making his debut on that occasion. Since then he has been busy, winning at Yarmouth on Derby day and finishing a five-length fifth of 10 in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket’s July Festival. Showing real tenacity and hardiness given he was having his fourth race in the space of a month, Ventura Tormenta looked a sitting duck as T...

Threat to contest the Darley cup at Newmarket Andrew Nelis

Threat will take his chance in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket rather than head to France this weekend. Trainer Richard Hannon had earmarked Sunday's seven-furlong Prix Jean Prat for last year's Gimcrack winner - but he has had a change of heart. Threat finished fifth to Palace Pier over a mile in the St James's Palace Stakes on his only outing to date this season. Hannon told his website www.richardhannonracing.co.uk: "As long as there are no last-minute glitches, the plan is for Threat to take his chance in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday. "We were originally looking at the Prix Jean Prat in France. But the ground there is very soft at the moment, and I don't really want to run him on that surface in what looks a hot little race..                           Andrew Nelis Racing

Tusks Raider set for Ebor Andrew Nelis racing

Raymond Tusk's big target for this season will be another crack at the Sky Bet Ebor, hopefully at York. The Richard Hannon-trained five-year-old was fourth in Europe's richest handicap last season, having started off his campaign with an excellent second to Dee Ex Bee in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot, where he also ran in the Gold Cup at the Royal meeting. Owned by Middleham Park Racing, he went on to the Melbourne Cup and won before the end of the year on the all-weather surface at Newcastle, where the Sagaro Stakes will be held this season following the amendments to the fixture list when racing resumes, which is provisionally due to be on June 1.
