British racing leaders have pledged to prioritise the retention of owners and key investors as part of a new recovery plan in response to the coronavirus crisis. The plan, published on Tuesday by the British Horseracing Authority, confirms the next phase of recovery policy agreed in discussions with the Racecourse Association and owners’, jockeys’ and trainers’ representatives. It identifies nine “industry goals” – including a full resumption of racing with maximum possible attendance and “best possible ownership and spectator experience”, the continuation of safety measures and strict control of social distancing on course, a reduction of the sport’s cost base and “pursuit of immediate Levy reform”..                        Andrew Nelis Racing

Oisin Murphy  said on Friday that the media are creating an “issue out of nothing” over the interference rules in racing. Interference has become a hot topic and again raised its head at Glorious Goodwood last week when Tilsit was allowed to keep a race despite badly impeding My Oberon in the closing stages.  Ryan Moore, the winning rider, was given a five-day ban . The British Horseracing Authority has confirmed an apprentice jockey has tested positive for coronavirus. The ruling body said the rider, who has not been named, has not ridden for “a few weeks”, but did recently attend a racing meeting. A BHA spokesman said: “Having been notified that an apprentice jockey had tested positive for coronavirus, the BHA has worked with the health protection agency, PJA, the jockey and their yard to assist their employer in following government guidance and managing the jockey’s recent close contacts. “A handful of people have been identified and asked to self-isolate for 14 days as a result. Plans to allow racegoers to attend the final day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival have been scrapped after the Government announced the cancellation of further pilot events for the return of crowds to sporting venues due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Sussex Downs were due to welcome a crowd of 5,000 on Saturday, which would have been the first time racegoers have been allowed on a racecourse since March. Nazeef has already exceeded the hopes of her connections and will therefore face her next challenge with "no pressure" in the Qatar Nassau Stakes. Nicky Henderson  and Sir Tony McCoy led the tributes to  Barry Geraghty  following his retirement from the saddle. The 40-year-old has brought the curtain down on a glittering riding career that spanned more than two decades and included 43 winners at the Cheltenham Festival and a Grand National victory aboard Monty’s Pass in 2003. Following the enforced retirement of Mick Fitzgerald in 2008, Geraghty was appointed stable jockey to Henderson, and the pair formed a formidable partnership – winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Bobs Worth and the Queen Mother Champion Chase with Sprinter Sacre in 2013..

Seamie Heffernan is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a 22-day suspension for his use of the whip in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly on Sunday. Heffernan finished in seventh place in the French Derby aboard the Aidan O'Brien-trained Order Of Australia, with the stewards ruling he had exceeded the five-stroke limit that exists in France by six strokes. Heffernan - who last weekend won the Irish Derby with Santiago - rode at Epsom on Saturday and was already due to sit out 14 days on his return to Ireland as a result of quarantine requirements. He said: "I got a fairly strong suspension, but there's strict rules there. Nineohtwooneoh gave Paul Nicholls a flying start to the new National Hunt season with victory in the first race on the resumption of British jumps racing at Southwell. The 2-1 favourite scored emphatically on his fencing debut in the Sign Solutions Nottingham Novices’ Handicap Chase, as he and jockey Harry Cobden evaded drama around them in an eventful contest. For 11-time champion trainer Nicholls, it was the perfect start to a campaign delayed by two months following the interruption of jumps racing which began back in March during the shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Owners will be allowed to attend race meetings from July 4, the British Horseracing Authority has announced. Tests events will be staged this week to see how well new protocols will work, but should all go smoothly, those involved in the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday will be allowed to see their horses run. Attendance will be limited to two owners per horse and they will be restricted to specific “owner zones” in line with current government guidance. Frankie Dettori returns to action at Kempton on Tuesday and, speaking live on BBC Breakfast this morning, he said he is feeling as excited as a kid at Christmas about getting back on the racecourse. Dettori has just his fifth ride in Britain in 2020 – and first since the resumption of the sport – on hot favourite Galsworthy in the 1m4f maiden stakes ( 4.30 ).  His mount is a steady 10-11 favourite following two promising efforts as a two-year-old.
