Epsom Derby meeting to look at new sponsorship Andrew Nelis racing

The  Derby  Festival at Epsom is open to a new lead sponsor and naming partner from 2021 after the Jockey Club and Investec agreed to end their 12-year partnership. As well as the Derby itself, sponsorship of the Oaks and the Coronation Cup is up for grabs, with the latter event set to return to Epsom in 2021 having been moved to Newmarket this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. In normal years, the Derby Festival is usually run over two days, with Derby day taking place on the first Saturday in June. A total of 369 entries have been made for Monday's planned resumption of racing at Newcastle. There has been no action on British tracks since March 17, but the British Horseracing Authority is aiming to start the sport on June 1, subject to Government approval. The six-furlong Callerton Novice Stakes and the 10-furlong Annitsford Maiden Stakes, both for three-year-olds and up, have proved particularly popular on the eight-race card, drawing 64 and 68 contenders respectively.

Horse Racing Ireland has broken its silence on a possible date for the resumption of racing in Ireland with chief executive Brian Kavanagh insisting "constructive engagement" had taken place with government in the past week. Kavanagh has been unavailable for comment since Taoiseach Leo Varadkar addressed the nation last Friday evening. However, in a statement issued late on Thursday evening, the HRI boss provided cautious optimism that racing may resume earlier than June 29, which has previously been outlined for behind-closed-doors sporting events in the roadmap for reopening society and business.
